Wilmington, NC
2022 National PFAS Conference
The 3rd National PFAS Conference took place in the coastal town of Wilmington, NC from June 15 - 17, 2022. The Wilmington area is part of the Cape Fear River watershed in which GenX-contaminated drinking water was first detected. This location was the first time the conference series chose a location in an existing contaminated community. For three days, scientists, advocates, community organizers, government agencies, and NGOs gathered to tackle the growing and complex problems of PFAS uses, exposures, health effects, and remediation.
The conference started with a powerful keynote address from Radhika Fox, U.S. EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Water. Ms. Fox announced four new PFAS health advisories--including a Lifetime Health Advisory of 10 ppt for GenX. This announcement came exactly five years after GenX was discovered in Wilmington residents' tap water.
